A 21st Birthday is a major milestone in the life of a young person, one that can signal the delicate transition from the teens to adulthood; yet make no mistake, even the most ‘grown up’ 21 year olds still love cupcakes!
Even so, the conscientious party host should remember that most 21 year olds may not appreciate ‘kiddy’ cupcakes. Regardless of what flavor or color the cakes are, the host may want to dispense with the clown and balloon cake toppers and the ‘smiley face’ icing flourishes; unless, of course, they want to see a mad stampede of eye-rolling 21 year olds racing from the party area!
Rest assured, though, that in many ways 21 year olds are still kids at heart. And what kid doesn’t love chocolate? One can’t go wrong with brown or black chocolate cupcakes at a 21st Birthday party, especially if they’re topped with thick, fluffy icing and tasty sprinkles of various colors.
And the host does not have to dispense entirely with cupcake party supplies at a 21st Birthday party. Just make sure that any cake toppers used are subtle, classy and suitably ‘cool.’ They could, for example, include plastic tokens that read “21” or “Happy 21st” (preferably in script), or symbols of adulthood, including tiny plastic cars, graduation caps, a briefcase if the guest of honor is about to embark on a career, etc. For a female guest of honor, a small paper or silk floral would make a lovely cupcake topper.
And of course, edible cupcake toppers are always appreciated, by guests of all ages. The host could spell out the number “21” in jelly beans, icing flourishes, nuts, chocolate morsels or kisses, cookie or licorice bites. Or the cupcakes themselves could figure in to the party design scheme; the host could serve the cupcakes on a table or platter in the shape of the numeral 21.
