When it comes to refreshments for an adult party, prepare to pull out all the stops and take some culinary risks; and that even applies to cupcakes.
Generally considered a children’s treat, more and more adults are serving cupcakes as a primo party snack. Ah, but make no mistake; these are not your daughter’s cupcakes. When presenting cupcakes at an adult party, dispense with the childlike party supplies such as clown and balloon cake toppers and smiley face tokens, rings and icing flourishes. Miniature fashion dolls and super hero figurines are probably out as well, unless the guest of honor is a doll or comic book collector, or just a major pop culture fan.
Adult cupcakes should be studies in class as well as good flavor. They could boast fluffy icing in elegant shades such as lavender or silver, or even an exotic shade such as mauve or mint grin. Classic ivory is another sound choice, as is ebony (preferably chocolate ebony!).
The cake itself can be virtually any flavor, though—since this is an adult party—the host can take some risks with the ingredients. A cupcake dipped in bourbon or prepared with a touch of wine in the ingredients could be a big hit with mature guests, as could a Kahlua style brownie cupcake. Just make sure that all guests are aware of the alcoholic content served in the cupcakes, in case they have any allergies or aversions to alcohol. Just to be safe, the host should have an alternate supply of cupcakes on hand, sans the ‘special ingredient.’
Cake toppers could range from miniature champagne glasses to delicate paper or silken florals, or perhaps even a liquor-filled chocolate. Racier novelty store cake toppers also are available, depending on just how ‘adult’ the party is!
