Gather the following items to begin creating these amazing but cute animal cupcakes: cupcake pan and liners, cake mix, various candies, frosting and food coloring to color the frosting, mini marshmallows, fondant, and gum paste.
To begin creating these unique animal cupcakes begin by baking the cupcakes. Mix the cake mix according to the recipe or box instructions. Using cupcake liners that represent the animal that the cupcake will become will add an extra special touch. An example of this would be a pink liner to represent a pig.
Once the cupcakes are baked and have had time to cool it is time to frost. Use the same color of frosting for each cupcake as the liner. If the liner is pink then use pink frosting, if the liner is white use white frosting etc. This is very important because the frosting will become the animals face. Once the cupcakes are frosted be sure that surface is smooth and contains no bumps or waves.
There are a variety of different ways that you can create the faces on these animal cupcakes. Either by using candy pieces such as M&M’s for eyes, licorice for the mouth, etc or, by using a piping bag and piping on the face. If you are creating a cat’s face for example, use chocolate chips for the eyes, M&M’s for the nose, black licorice for the whiskers and the mouth.
For the ears of the animal cupcake stick additional candies to the top of the face of the animal. For the animals that have larger ears shape fondant into the shape of the animals ear. For a pigs ear use such things as pink jelly beans because they are normally so small.
