Cinco de Mayo, or Fifth of May, is a Mexican holiday celebrating freedom and democracy, and is the perfect reason to bake up some cupcakes for you, your family, friends, party guests, or whoever you like! With the American Civil War being such a big event, and Mexico's unlikely victory over the French army, it's certainly a day to make something special to commemorate such a great achievement.
There are many things you could do for Cinco de Mayo cupcakes. There are lots of Mexican themes and images available that you could use to decorate, and plenty of ways you can present your cupcakes in order to make the most of this occasion. The Mexican flag is green, white and red, so you could use food coloring to make up the flag, or you could use piped icing to create the flag on each cupcake. Alternatively, you could make one giant Mexican flag out of all of your cupcakes! Another idea is to use Mexican flavors – while Mexican cuisine differs all over Mexico, there are many general flavors you can use in order to represent it. These are mainly tomato, vanilla, avocado, papaya, pineapple, chilli and peanuts. Bear in mind though that tomato or chilli cupcakes probably aren't the best idea! However, things like vanilla, papaya and peanuts are all great to use in cupcakes. Just make sure nobody has a peanut allergy before adding them!
Another great idea for your Cinco de Mayo cupcakes could be to present them on a Mexican Sombrero instead of a normal plate or cupcake stand. This will really add to your Cinco de Mayo theme and really engage your guests, family or friends. Since the sombrero is also something identified world-wide with Mexico, everyone is sure to know what your cupcakes are celebrating, so consider this while you're getting your party supplies together.
