Ideas for
Columbus Day Centerpieces
Columbus Day homemade centerpieces can easily be made by children in honor of this special occasion. Easy Columbus Day centerpieces can include a homemade map of what the new world looked like at the time. Have children draw and paint how explorers saw the world at the time on a large paper bag - this is to make the map look aged. Add some light splashes of water to the map and cut the edges unevenly for an old look. A flat map is good but an entire globe is even better. Tape sheets of paper on a large ball and have children draw Earth circa 1492 on it. Have the children draw the map on sheets of paper first or have them draw the map on once the paper is securely applied. Not only are drawing maps fun but educational as well. While kids are enjoying the art part of it, teach them different locations on the map. Once finished, place the globe on a coffee can or a round cylinder. Place a sheet of paper around the cylinder Happy Columbus Day.
Eggcup Columbus Day centerpieces are incredibly simple to make. Cut out the egg cartons and paint them brown. Cut out small white pieces of paper and glue or tape them to the toothpicks. Use 2-3 toothpicks and a couple sails on each ship (Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria). The Santa Maria was a larger ship so use painted bowls with popsicles sticks and larger sheets of paper.
