The Groundhog is the only mammal to have a day named in his honor which is February 2 it stems from the ancient belief that hibernating creatures were able to predict the arrival of springtime by their emergence.

Ideas for
Groundhog Day Centerpieces While Groundhog Day is not the most festive of special days on the calendar does not mean children are forbidden to participate in Groundhog Day homemade centerpieces and celebratory activities. A toilet paper roll groundhog is very simple to make. Te toilet paper roll is already brown so no need to paint it a groundhog color. Cut out the groundhogs face from additional pieces of cardboard such as hands, feet, and the face. Glue the features on the toilet paper roll and children have a fun. To make the ground hog even larger place brown construction paper or a paper bag around a coffee can or other container. Cut out the face, feet, and hands from construction paper and paste them on. Inside the container, place milk chocolate candies or other treats to enjoy.
A handmade Groundhog Day centerpiece can also hang from the ceiling in the middle of the dining room table or an area of ones choosing. Make a groundhog from pieces of brown, white, and black felt. Draw and cut out the ground hog and glue him or her together. For additional fun, add clothing and accessories to the groundhog; give him or her name and a back-story. Once the groundhog or groundhogs are completed, poke a small hole at the top of the head, insert string, and hang where desired. Do not stop at just groundhog felt animals. Allow children to make their favorite animals whether they are tigers, lions, bears or others.
