Kwanzaa Centerpieces
Use a kinara, a seven-candle holder to create a basic homemade Kwanzaa centerpiece. Place the mat at the center of the table and position the kinara on top. Surround the candleholder with dried ears of corn, fruits and vegetables and the Unity Cup or Kikombe Cha Umoja. Place a series of small presents on the mkeka, with educational value and that have a connection to the African American culture.
Children may want to contribute to the Kwanzaa celebration by making their own homemade centerpieces. A homemade Unity cup is very simple to make. Use a Styrofoam cup and paint a Kwanzaa pattern on it. Paint a wooden doll pin and wooden doll stand black. Glue the wooden doll pin, stand together to the bottom of the cup with a hot glue gun, and let dry.
Children may want to make a kinara centerpiece for the Kwanzaa celebration. Use 7 egg cartons and paint 7 craft sticks red, black, and green. Glue the craft sticks to the egg cartons (which can be painted brown). Use yellow, orange, red construction paper or cellophane to create the flames. Every day a different candle is lit so add the construction paper or cellophane one day at a time to resemble a real kinara.
